As if you can take horror seriously all of the time! Some frighteners just beg for a good mocking every now and again.

Horror from the 1980s finally meets its match in “Stan Helsing.” Bo Zenga, producer of the first “Scary Movie,” is at it again, this time writing and directing this horror movie send up.

A descendent of the great vampire hunter Van Helsing, Stan Helsing (Steve Howey) works at a video store. It is Halloween night and before he and his peeps Teddy (Kenan Thompson), Nadine (Diora Baird) and Mia (Desi Lydic) can hit their party, Stan has to drop off some DVDs in a creepy gated community.

One mishap leads to another, and they’re fighting their way through “Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Halloween,” “Hellraiser,” “Chucky,” “Friday the 13th” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” Technically, there are dozens more horror movies referenced, but those are the biggies.

Famed comedian and early sci-fi action star Leslie Nielson runs a local diner while dressed as a heavy-set woman. It is in “his” joint that the movie comes to a head in a “West Side Story” Sharks vs. Jets showdown–but instead of dance fighting, they do it karaoke style.

Mia is the stereotypical blonde, and she gets my favorite line of the show: “I’d give my right arm to be ambidextrous.” Maybe it was just the mood I was in or else I’m giving myself away as the closet nerd that I am, but I laughed like hell at that one.
