Blu-ray Day: Decisions, Decisions

Oh, my poor bank account.

September 15th sees the release of not one, not two, but THREE awesome Asian flicks on big Blu. Jet Li in “Hero,” Donnie Yen in “Iron Monkey” and last but certainly not least, Jackie Chan in his stupefyingly cool “Legend of the Drunken Master,” also starring my beloved Anita Mui. Sigh. My debit card might melt down from overuse.

If I could ONLY choose one, I think I’d go “Drunken Master.” I remember seeing this in the theaters, oh, ten years ago? It was just crazy. I went back the next week and dragged along my friend who was definitely not a fan of kung fu flicks. I had to show him just how insane this movie was. Jackie Chan spoofs the drunken boxing style of fighting by getting drunk with actual booze just to unleash his technique. Seeing Wong Fei-Hong’s stepmom (Anita Mui) toss him bottles of liquor and him trying to chug them down mid-fight is a riot. And the finalé…wow! Fei-Hong in the foundry with no booze in sight, what can he do? Well, let’s just say he resorts to drinking something humans aren’t supposed to ingest…and oh man he just goes nuts! The innovative and unbelievably thrilling fight scenes made this legendary movie a fan favorite, and my first choice.

The Wong Fei-Hong character returns to Blu in “Iron Monkey,” directed by Yuen Woo-Ping. It’s like a Robin Hood martial arts tale in which a young Fei-Hong and his stern father help a kind village doctor/masked hero combat oppressive government officials. Along with “Drunken Master” it’s another fun, crazy flick that perfectly captures the spirit of golden-age HK film. Amazing fights, slapstick comedy and larger-than-life action make it another Top-Ten list kinda movie.

Zhang Yimou’s “Hero” is a great choice with an iconic cast and gorgeous cinematography from Christopher Doyle. The first installment of his enthralling wuxia trilogy, it was followed by “House of Flying Daggers” and “Curse of the Golden Flower.” Dramatic and jaw-droppingly beautiful, it’s guaranteed to look amazing on anyone’s Hi-Def rig.

Whew…okay, breathe. Also coming down the pipe on Blu? Get this: Takashi Miike’s brilliant, creepy and flat-out sick horror movie “Audition.” That’s no lie. See it once if you dare. I hate talking about it, I wouldn’t want to spoil the shock of seeing it if you’re unfamiliar.

And later in the year, Blu will see the anime series “Samurai Champloo” as well as the latest take on the blind Zatoichi character, this time played by a woman, in the 2008 Japanese flick simply titled “Ichi.” Scatter in all the killer DVD releases between the Blu ones, and yeah, you can see it’s gonna be a cool, cool year. Umm… dude, can you spare a couple bucks?
