Interview: Rollin’ with 50 Cent through ‘Streets of Blood’

50 CentCurtis Jackson might be fairly new to the movie business, but he’s known to millions and millions of fans the world over as 50 Cent. Perhaps the most successful rapper of the decade, his albums “Get Rich or Die Tryin” and “The Massacre” have gone multi-platinum.

More than just a music star, he’s living proof that anything is still possible in America. Curtis was born into poverty and America’s vicious drug culture. His troubled young life was almost ended when he was shot 9 times at close range. He recovered and with the help of legendary rap pioneer Jam Master Jay and best-selling rapper Eminem, Curtis quickly rose to the top of the charts.

Still cutting records, Curtis is also branching out in the entertainment world. He is the co-star of “Streets of Blood,” a crime thriller that released just this week. The movie also stars Val Kilmer and Sharon Stone. Movie ‘Tudes was lucky enough to catch up with Curtis for a brief minute to talk to him about “Streets of Blood” and his future projects.

MOVIE ‘TUDES: “Streets of Blood” is a crime thriller set in The Big Easy after Hurricane Katrina. Please tell us about your character, a detective partnered with Val Kilmer.

CURTIS JACKSON: My character Stan wants to play things straight but cannot provide the things his family needs and wants, so he makes some decisions that catch up with him.

MT: As one of this decade’s most successful rappers, you really seem to be branching out into other entertainment ventures. Have you always wanted to be a movie star? What motivated you to get into acting?

50: [I] Always wanted to act because you can tell a more complete story with a movie character than you can with a 3-minute song.

MT: Your co-stars in “Streets of Blood” are pretty big names in Hollywood. What are Val Kilmer and Sharon Stone like in real life?

50: Completely down to earth. We all remain close. I just got back from Europe where I attended amfAR [The Foundation for AIDs Research gathering], hosted by Sharon.

MT: If you could go back in time and give advice to yourself, what would it be and at what age?

50: I would skip meeting a few women in my past. One especially.

MT: What projects can we look forward to seeing you in next?

50: “Jekyll & Hyde” co-starring Forest Whitaker, directed by Abel Ferrera.
