‘Laid to Rest’ with Bobbi Sue Luther
Boys and girls, your cinematic sugar momma has got an extra-special treat for you! Today I have a special interview with actress Bobbi Sue Luther. Living proof that hard work and a little luck can land you a starring role in a movie, Bobbi Sue will tell us what it is like to chase the Hollywood dream. She has worked her way up as a model for St. Pauli Girl beer, Playboy and Maxim to bit parts in movies and a hosting gig on TV’s “Junkyard Wars.” Now she is the lead actress of “Laid to Rest,” a horror movie–that released yesterday–about a woman who wakes up in a coffin with amnesia only to discover a homicidal maniac really has it in for her.
MOVIE ‘TUDES: “Laid to Rest” is your first starring role in a movie. Please tell us a little bit about what that is like? Have you always wanted to perform in movies?
BOBBI SUE LUTHER: I have always been a performer. It started at a young age watching TV, movies and pageants. I started very young doing stage plays and pageants and moved up from there. I eventually moved out here and hosted a few TV shows. It’s a very hard business and [difficult] getting your first starring role, so I had to create it for myself essentially by making the movie with Rob.
MT: The way the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences treats horror movies, you’d think anybody could do it. In reality, a lot of work goes into it. Please tell us what it took for you and director Robert Hall (also your husband and one of Hollywood’s top FX men) to get this picture made.
BL: Well for starters it took our bank account! It took a whole lot of commitment on our part as well as our friends who helped us get this movie made. We were in a unique position with Almost Human [Hall's special effects company] as most filmmakers don’t get the kind of production value with FX that we had on such a tight budget. FX can be one of the most expensive things in a horror film, which means if you don’t have money, you don’t get FX and if you do, they are not very good. That was not the case with us, but even more so, we understood FX, how much time was needed for them on set, the lighting, and the angles, everything. That was as important to us as we had a tight schedule, and if we did not understand this facet of filmmaking, we would have wasted a lot of that precious time. The entire process was long and expensive, and I can honestly say I have aged at a rapid pace over the last year from the lack of sleep. You come out of it though with so many new friends and experiences, it makes every tough spot worth it.
MT: As the smokin’ hot female lead of a slasher, how do you manage to protect your lungs and throat with all of the screaming that is required take after take?
BL: I didn’t!! I loose my voice easily in every day life, so I had to be very cautious. Tea, honey, sleep when you can get it. Don’t talk unless you have to. It sucked!!! I naturally have a very hoarse voice. I don’t scream too much in the movie though, as Rob wrote it for me to not have some of the traditional scream queen character elements.
MT: Is it as satisfying as it looks during one scene in “Laid to Rest” where you get to bash in someone’s head with a baseball bat and get splattered in blood–even if it’s all fake?
BL: It is!!! Its just fun to swing a bat! No, really as an actor, I try to authentically have thoughts in my head that take me to a place of fear, love or satisfaction. I try to authenticate that feeling so when I am…lets say, bashing someone’s head in…I feel authentically satisfied because I am thinking about something that satisfies me. Wow, I just went all “Inside the Actor’s Studio” on you! In addition, we did that head bash in a series, and every bat hit I got sprayed with more and more blood and by the end I was literally covered!!!! The crew was cheering and taking photos with me, it was one of my more fond memories on set.
MT: You worked with the legendary Robert “Freddy Kruger” Englund in the film “Killer Pad.” What is the horror legend like in real life?
BL: He is just as funny in real life, really a nice guy. He appreciates other actors and filmmakers and genuinely loves what he does. People like that are infectious, and you just want to be around him all the time.
MT: 2009 looks like the year of Bobbi Sue Luther with at least 3 more releases scheduled. (”Night of Demons,” “The Slammin’ Salmon” and “Made in Romania”) Please tell us a little about what we can look forward to in these films.
BL: Well, they span from horror to comedy, so I guess you see a small cross section of what I can do as an actor! I am really excited about them all and could not be more thrilled with the year to come.
MT: In “Laid to Rest” you’re pitted against an unstoppable homicidal maniac. How would the real Bobbi Sue Luther take care of business?
BL: I always say I would gouge someone’s eyes out with my thumbs…sharks, people, whatever! That works right???
